I remember when I started practicing yoga a few years back. I had no idea what to expect walking into my first class. I for sure didn’t expect it to be as challenging and as relaxing as it was. I also didn’t realize at first, but yoga was helping tremendously with relieving stress. It allowed me to challenge myself to be present in the moment and challenge the constant thoughts running through my mind. I’m sure you can relate.

 

After years of practice, I went through my 250hr Teacher Training to deepen my knowledge about the different types and forms of yoga. I dove deep into the exploration of yoga and I can't wait to share it with you!

Cortisol, also known as the “stress hormone” is an important hormone in the body, Secreted by the adrenal glands and involved in the following functions:

  • PROPER GLUCOSE METABOLISM

  • REGULATION OF BLOOD PRESSURE

  • INSULIN RELEASE FOR BLOOD SUGAR MAINTENANCE

  • IMMUNE FUNCTIONIN

  • FLAMMATORY RESPONCE

FIGHT OR FLIGHT

It is secreted in higher levels during the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response to stress and is responsible for several stress-related changes in the body. While cortisol is an important and helpful part of the body’s response to stress, it’s important that the body’s relaxation responses to be activated so the body’s functions can return to normal following a stressful event.

Unfortunately, due to our current high-stress culture, the body’s stress response is activated so often that the body doesn’t always have a chance to return to normal, resulting in a state of chronic stress.

So pretty much anything that puts emotional or physical stress on your body can increase cortisol which in turn, could be making you FAT!

So, How Do You

To keep cortisol levels healthy and under control, the body’s relaxation response should be activated after the fight or flight response occurs. Thats where Yoga comes into the picture- has been a proven for stress management  and prevents your body from reacting to stress in the first place.

Cortisol secretion varies among individuals. One person may secrete higher levels or cortisol than another in the same situation. Studies have also shown that people who secrete higher levels of cortisol in response to stress also tend to eat more food, and food that is higher in carbs than people who secrete less cortisol. So if this sounds like you, it is so important for you to learn stress management techniques and maintain a low-stress lifestyle.

A study in 2007, journal proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that going through integrative body-mind training (a type of meditation training) helped to lessen the body’s release of cortisol and lower anxiety and fatigue levels in college students.
